Michael Agwu is a contemporary artist born and raised in Nigeria, currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His work centers on the creation of one of a kind portrait mosaics composed entirely of electronic waste, transforming discarded materials into highly detailed and expressive human forms.
Rooted in both personal history and cultural identity, Agwu’s practice explores the relationship between past and present bridging his African heritage with the modern, technology-driven world. Through the use of repurposed electronic components, he reconstructs the human face as a site of memory, resilience, and transformation.
His work reflects a deeper narrative: the reclamation of materials often associated with disposability, reimagined to honor Black and African identity. By merging precision, texture, and unconventional materials, Agwu challenges traditional notions of portraiture while introducing a new visual language grounded in both innovation and cultural continuity.
At its core, his practice is about transformation of material, of identity, and of perception turning what is overlooked into something enduring and powerful.
